At a certain level of electrostatic build-up, a discharge suddenly occurs, sparking in the vapour space volume of the partially filled tank, igniting a combustible mixture of gasoline and air. The resultant explosion could cause personal injury or death to a bystander or operator, as well as allowing fuel spillage, and possibly resulting in a fire.
