How the calculation works

Cost per full charge = battery kWh times electricity price, divided by charging efficiency (we use 90% as a realistic AC home-charging assumption). Cost per 100 km uses your real-world consumption (15-22 kWh/100km is typical for most EVs).

Why your home rate matters most

Home off-peak electricity is usually 2-4 times cheaper per kWh than DC fast charging. Owners who charge at home 80% of the time and DC-fast only on road trips save the most money.

What is a realistic kWh/100km figure?

Small EVs (Tesla Model 3 RWD, Hyundai Kona) use 14-17 kWh/100km. Mid-size EVs (Model Y, ID.4) use 17-20 kWh/100km. Large SUVs and trucks (Rivian, Lightning) use 22-30 kWh/100km.

How much does DC fast charging cost?

In Europe DC fast typically runs 0.45-0.79 EUR/kWh. In the US it runs 0.30-0.55 USD/kWh. Plan-based pricing on Tesla, EVgo, or Ionity can be 20-30% cheaper.

Are there free chargers?

Some retailers, hotels, and workplaces still offer free Level 2 charging. Free DC fast chargers are rare in 2026.

How accurate is this calculator?

Within about 10% for AC home charging. Real-world DC fast-charging costs vary by network plan, time of day, and idle fees - check the operator app for exact pricing.

Does cold weather increase charging cost?

Yes - cabin heating and battery preconditioning can add 20-40% to winter consumption. Pre-heat the car while still plugged in to minimize this.
