What this site is for

Buying a used car? Learn to judge it yourself.

CarsMultiverse trains you to judge a used car with your own eyes and hands. How to inspect it, how to test-drive it properly, how to spot a car that has been in an accident and repaired, how to read what its odometer and its paperwork are really telling you, what to ask the person selling it, how to read what its tyres are telling you, and what actually makes its value rise and fall. The method works anywhere in the world. Start wherever your question is.

Step 1How to Check a Used CarThe complete walkthrough. What to look at, in what order, and what each finding actually means. Step 2The Test-Drive CompanionWhat to do before, during and after the drive, and how to read what the car tells you. Step 3How to Spot Accident RepairPanel gaps, paint texture, overspray and bolt marks, the signs a car has been put back together. Step 4Odometer & Wear AuditDoes the wear match the reading? Cross-check the dash against the seat, wheel, pedals, keys, glass and paperwork.Step 5How to Read a Service HistorySort every document by how hard it is to fake, spot a forged book or invoice, and read the gaps in the story.Step 6Seller Conversation PlaybookTwelve questions that get real answers from a private seller or a dealer, and how to read a reply that avoids the question.Step 7Tyre Sidewall DecoderRead the date code, size, load and speed rating on any sidewall, and work out what the wear pattern says about the car.Step 8Depreciation ExplainedWhy value falls the way it does, where a car stops depreciating and starts costing, and how to choose the point on the curve that suits how long you will keep it.Step 9WLTP & EPA Figures ExplainedWhy the number on the sticker is never the number you get, what a laboratory test cycle actually measures, and how to turn an official figure into a realistic expectation for your own driving.Step 10Inspection Deduction SheetTick what you found, add your own repair quotes, and print one sheet to hand the seller.Step 11Price Adjustment for FaultsWhich findings are worth a discount, which are walk away signals, and how to quote them.Step 12How to Negotiate a Used CarEvery finding from the nine steps before this one is a negotiating lever. How to turn what you found into a defensible price, without ever quoting a figure, and how to recognise the deal to walk away from.

QUICK ANSWERS

Common questions, answered fast

Short, honest answers, with a link if you want the full story.
Is an electric car actually cheaper than a gas car?
Often yes, but it depends on how much you drive and whether you can charge at home. Charging at home is far cheaper per mile than petrol, so high-mileage drivers with home charging save the most. Run your own numbers in the calculator to see your figure.
Should I buy new or used?
A good used car lets someone else absorb the steepest depreciation, so it’s usually the smarter money move. New cars give you the latest tech and full warranty. See which cars hold their value and our used-EV guide.
Hybrid or fully electric, which should I get?
The deciding factor is almost always charging access. If you can charge where you park, an EV usually wins on cost. If you can’t, a hybrid gives big fuel savings with zero change to how you refuel. Here’s the full comparison.
How long do electric-car batteries last?
Longer than most people expect. Modern packs commonly outlast the rest of the car, with slow, predictable capacity loss and a long separate warranty. Here’s what the data shows.
How do I find a dealer, charger or mechanic near me?
Use our Find Near You directory. Pick your country and city to see live local maps for dealers, EV charging stations and trusted mechanics.
How can I pay less for car insurance?
Compare quotes before you renew, and factor insurance in before you buy (EVs can cost more to insure). Start with our cheap car insurance guide.
