CARSMULTIVERSEWatch a recall

A recall is not filed once. When a manufacturer changes what it told the regulator, it files again, and the earlier report stays published. Nobody counts how often that happens. We did.

What we found

We read the document index NHTSA publishes for the 1,440 most recent American recall campaigns. 611 of them, 42.4 per cent, have more than one Part 573 report on file.

The median campaign with more than one filing spans 25 days from the first report to the last. 42 span more than six months. 3 span more than a year.

Why this matters

Each of these is a recall where the description of the fault, the instruction for the fix, or the number of vehicles has been restated at least once. An owner who read the notice after the first filing and acted on it later may have acted on wording that had been replaced. Nothing in the public register says which version they read, because the register holds one version at a time.

On any recall page here, if NHTSA holds more than one filing, you will see the full list with the date each was loaded.

How this was measured, and what it does not say

Check it yourself

Every figure here comes from one public endpoint, with no key and no account. For any campaign, ask NHTSA for its document list and count the reports whose name begins with RCLRPT. Recall data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is in the public domain. The counting, and any error in it, is ours.
