CARSMULTIVERSEWatch a recall

Under 49 CFR 577.7 an American manufacturer is to write to the owner within sixty days of filing its part 573 defect report. This table counts, for every manufacturer with at least twenty-five campaigns where the file carries both dates, how often that sixty days was missed. It is the promise tracker read as a league table, and it is rebuilt every day from NHTSA's own file.

2,040 of 8,535 campaigns in this table were notified late, 23.9 per cent. Ranked worst first.

Read it carefully. A blank notification date is a gap in the record, not proof of a gap in the post, and those campaigns are not counted here at all. The Administrator may set another date, and an interim letter can be followed by a second one the file does not carry. "Longest wait" is the largest number of days between the part 573 filing and the owner letter for that manufacturer. A manufacturer with few campaigns can sit high on a handful of late ones, which is why the table starts at twenty-five.
