How to write a correction we can act on

Corrections are the most useful message we get, and they are easier for us to act on when they contain four things. The page, by its address. The sentence, quoted, so we are looking at the same words you are. What you believe the correct position is. And, where the point turns on a fact rather than on wording, the body that publishes it: a tax authority, a registration office, an inspection body, a safety regulator, a standards organisation.

You do not need to be polite about it and you do not need to be certain. Tell us what looks wrong and we will check it. If you are right we fix the page and, where the change is material, we say on the page what changed. If we cannot verify a point at a source we are willing to name, we take the claim down rather than leave it up with a hedge attached.

What we can help with

  • A factual error, a broken link, a page that will not load, or a tool that behaves oddly.
  • A gap in the guides: a stage of buying or owning a car that we have not covered and should.
  • A question about how we reached a position, or about the standard we hold our pages to.
  • Press and research enquiries about our editorial approach.
  • Advertising, sponsorship and commercial enquiries.

What we cannot help with

We cannot tell you whether to buy a particular car. We have not seen it, we have not driven it, and anyone who gives you that answer by email is guessing with your money. What we can do is point you at the page that teaches the check you are unsure about, and the answer to almost every version of that question is an independent inspection by a qualified person before you pay.

We are not licensed financial, legal, insurance or tax advisers, and we do not give personal advice in any of those areas. We cannot value your car, we cannot tell you what to offer for somebody else, we cannot interpret a contract you have been sent, and we cannot intervene in a dispute with a dealer, a garage, an insurer or a finance company. Where a question needs a professional, we will say so rather than answer it badly.

We also do not accept guest posts, link exchanges, or paid placements in editorial pages, and we do not publish content supplied by third parties.

What to expect

We read everything. We reply to genuine enquiries, usually within a few working days, and corrections go to the front of the queue because a wrong page is doing damage while it sits there. If your message needs us to check something at source, the reply takes longer, and the reply will tell you what we checked.

Our standards are set out in our editorial policy, the corrections process is described on our corrections page, and how the site earns its keep is on our disclosure page. If your message includes personal information, our privacy policy explains what happens to it.
