Everything your car does – accelerating, steering, and above all stopping – happens through four palm-sized patches of rubber. Yet tyres get less attention than phone cases. The knowledge gap is fixable in ten minutes: how to read what is printed on the tyre, when replacement is actually due, and which savings are false economies.
Reading the sidewall: 205/55 R16 91V, decoded
- 205 – width in millimetres.
- 55 – aspect ratio: the sidewall height as a percentage of width.
- R16 – radial construction, 16-inch wheel diameter.
- 91 – load index: the weight each tyre may carry. Never go below what your car specifies.
- V – speed rating. Match or exceed the original specification.
The other code that matters: the DOT date stamp – four digits like “3523” meaning week 35 of 2023. That is the tyre’s birthday, and it matters more than most buyers know, because rubber ages whether or not it rolls.
When tyres are actually due for replacement
Tread depth: legal minimums (1.6 mm in most of Europe and 2/32″ in the US) are the floor, not the target – wet braking performance degrades sharply below about 3 mm, which is where planning begins. Test with a depth gauge or the coin trick, and check inner and outer edges, not just the centre: uneven wear is also your cheapest wheel-alignment diagnostic.
Age: most manufacturers say inspect annually from year five and replace by year ten regardless of tread – the rubber hardens and cracks, and grip quietly evaporates. This is the catch with low-mileage cars and bargain part-worn tyres: plenty of tread, expired rubber. Check that date stamp on any used car you view and any “new” tyre being fitted.
Damage: sidewall bulges (broken internal cords – replace now, that is a blowout scheduled for a motorway), cracks, and any puncture in the sidewall itself, which cannot be safely repaired. Tread-area punctures are usually repairable for a small fee.
Pressure: the five-minute monthly habit
Underinflation is the most common tyre condition on the road: it wears the edges, burns extra fuel, overheats the carcass and lengthens braking distances. The correct pressure is not on the tyre (that number is the maximum) – it is on the sticker in the driver’s door jamb or fuel flap. Check monthly and before long trips, cold. Cars with pressure-monitoring systems still deserve the manual check; TPMS alerts at a threshold, typically well after efficiency and wear have suffered. Buying: where to save and where never to
The performance spread between a premium tyre and a no-name budget tyre is largest exactly where you need it most: wet braking, where independent tests routinely find several car-lengths of difference from the same speed. Mid-range brands from major manufacturers are the value sweet spot for most drivers. Skip part-worn tyres – you are buying someone else’s discarded safety margin with an unknown history. Replace in pairs (same axle) at minimum, keep the better pair on the rear (yes, even on front-wheel-drive cars – rear grip is what prevents spins), and if you live with real winters, dedicated winter or all-weather tyres outperform “all-season” compromises when it counts.
The routine that covers everything
- Monthly: pressures (cold), plus a walk-around glance for damage.
- Every service: rotation per the manual, so wear stays even.
- Annually from year five: age inspection; by year ten, retirement regardless of tread.
- Any pull, vibration or uneven wear: alignment check – cheaper than the tyres it is eating.
