Charging levels and plug types explained
Level 1 uses a regular household outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour — fine as a backup, too slow as your main method. Level 2 (240 V) is what you'll find at workplaces, shopping centers and most home installations, and it's the everyday workhorse. DC fast charging is for long trips, adding substantial range in tens of minutes.
On the plug side, most U.S. EVs charge on J1772 for Level 2 and CCS for DC fast charging. Tesla vehicles use the connector now standardized as NACS, and a growing number of brands are gaining access to Tesla's Supercharger network using an adapter. Major public networks include Tesla Supercharger, Electrify America, EVgo and ChargePoint.
What charging costs
Prices vary widely by network, location, charging speed and time of day, so always check the price shown before you plug in. As a rule, charging at home is the cheapest, public Level 2 sits in the middle, and DC fast charging on the road is the priciest. Some networks bill per kilowatt-hour while others bill per minute (and a few states regulate which is allowed), so the same charge can cost different amounts depending on how it's metered. Tips for charging on a road trip
- Plan around fast chargers. Map DC fast-charging stops before you leave, and have a backup site in case one is busy or down.
- Keep a couple of network apps. No single network covers everywhere, so having two or three set up saves headaches.
- Charge to ~80% on the road. Fast charging slows above 80%, so shorter, more frequent stops are usually quicker overall.
- Precondition in cold weather. Many EVs warm the battery before a fast-charging stop for better speeds.
