EVs & charging in Germany

Germany has invested heavily in charging, with dense Type 2 AC coverage and a fast-growing CCS rapid network along the autobahn and in cities (Ionity, EnBW, Aral pulse and others). Homeowners typically install a Wallbox, while apartment dwellers rely on public and workplace charging.

Costs, taxes & low-emission zones

Fuel and electricity are relatively expensive, so efficiency counts. Annual motor-vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer) is based partly on emissions, favouring low-CO₂ cars. Many cities enforce an Umweltzone requiring an environmental windscreen sticker (Umweltplakette); EVs qualify for the cleanest category.

Buying & owning a car in Germany

Cars drive on the right. Every car needs the periodic TÜV/DEKRA technical inspection (Hauptuntersuchung) plus an emissions check, and winter tyres are effectively required in wintry conditions. Independent inspection before buying used is a normal part of the process.

Tip: see our EV & charging guide, or run the numbers in the EV vs gas calculator.
