Authorised vs independent dealers
Authorised dealers (Vertragshändler) represent a specific brand, sell its new cars and carry out warranty and recall work. Independent dealers (freie Händler) sell used cars across many brands and can be competitive on price. For used cars, what protects you is less the type of dealer and more the documentation and the statutory warranty that comes with a commercial purchase.
The warranty that protects you
When you buy a used car from a dealer (rather than privately), German law generally provides a statutory warranty (Gewährleistung) covering defects that existed at the time of sale, typically for a period the dealer cannot simply waive entirely. This is separate from any manufacturer or extended guarantee (Garantie). Private sales are usually sold “gekauft wie gesehen” with warranty excluded, so they carry more risk.
What to check on a used car
- Service booklet (Scheckheft). A complete, stamped service history (“scheckheftgepflegt”) is a strong positive sign.
- TÜV/HU report. Check when the next Hauptuntersuchung is due and review the last report for noted issues.
- Vehicle documents. Confirm the registration papers (Fahrzeugbrief/-schein, Zulassungsbescheinigung) match the car and seller.
- Test drive and inspection. Drive it properly; for higher-value cars consider an inspection by TÜV, DEKRA or a trusted workshop.
