MOT vs servicing — what's the difference?
The MOT is a legally required annual check of safety and emissions for most cars over three years old; passing it confirms the car meets minimum standards on the test day, but it isn't a substitute for maintenance. Servicing is the routine upkeep — oil, filters, brakes, fluids — that keeps the car reliable and protects its value. Many garages offer both, and combining them can be convenient.
Franchised dealer vs independent garage
Franchised dealers have brand-specific training and equipment and are the right choice for recalls and certain warranty work. Independent garages usually charge lower labour rates and can service many makes; a good one is ideal for routine work. Having servicing done at an independent does not automatically void a new-car warranty, provided the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses suitable parts — keep the records.
