EVs & charging in Ireland
EV adoption is growing with government support. Public charging uses Type 2 (AC) and CCS (DC); ESB ecars runs much of the network, alongside IONITY, EasyGo and Tesla. Rural coverage is improving but still patchier than cities.
Costs, taxes & incentives
Fuel is expensive. Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and motor tax are emissions-based, favouring low-CO₂ and electric cars; EV purchase and home-charger grants have been available — confirm current amounts.
Buying & owning a car in Ireland
Cars drive on the left. The NCT roadworthiness test is required periodically once a car passes a set age, and many used cars are imports — budget VRT and check history before assuming a bargain.
Tip: work out an EV's running cost with the EV vs gas calculator.
