The short answer: if you can plug in at home or at work, charging an EV is easy and cheap — in all 36 countries we track, home electricity beats petrol per kilometre, by 1.7× to 8.4×. Charging only feels complicated because of the jargon. Here it is, question by question, in plain English.
What are the three charging speeds?
Slow (2–3 kW, a household socket) adds roughly 10–15 km of range per hour; fast AC (7–22 kW, a home wallbox or public post) adds 40–120 km per hour; rapid DC (50–350 kW, motorway stations) takes a typical EV from 10% to 80% in 18–40 minutes.
You’ll use all three at different times: slow when a socket is all you have, fast AC for overnight and workplace charging, rapid DC on long trips. Do I need a home charger, and is it worth it?
You don’t strictly need a wallbox — but if you have a driveway or garage, a 7 kW home charger is the single best upgrade an EV owner can make: it fills the battery overnight and unlocks the cheapest electricity of the day.

How does public charging work, and what does it cost?
You’ll find public chargers at supermarkets, car parks and motorway services; you pay by app, contactless card or a network subscription — and it typically costs 1.5–2× the home rate for AC, and 2–3× for rapid DC.

How far can an EV really go on a charge?
Most new EVs in 2026 officially manage 300–530 km (WLTP); knock 10–20% off for real-world driving, and up to 30% in deep winter or at sustained motorway speed.

How much does charging cost compared with petrol?
At July 2026 prices, driving 100 km on home electricity costs from $0.54 (Qatar) to $7.57 (Ireland) — and in every one of the 36 countries we track it undercuts petrol, typically by 2–4×.

Is an electric car right for me?
Yes, if you can charge at or near home and your typical day is under ~150 km — you’ll save money from day one and rarely think about chargers. Think twice if you can’t charge regularly or often drive 500+ km days on routes with sparse rapid charging.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?
On a 7 kW home wallbox, a typical EV charges fully overnight (6–10 hours). On a rapid DC charger, 10% to 80% takes 18–40 minutes for most 2026 models.
Can I charge an EV from a normal household socket?
Yes — it’s the slowest option at roughly 10–15 km of range per hour, fine as a backup or for low-mileage drivers, but a 7 kW wallbox is far more practical for daily use.
Is public rapid charging more expensive than home charging?

Does charging to 100% damage the battery?
Routinely fast-charging to 100% adds wear; most manufacturers recommend a daily limit of 80–90% and occasional 100% charges before long trips. Slow AC charging is gentler than rapid DC.
