Electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid? Here's how to choose the right one for how — and where — you actually drive.
"Should I go electric or hybrid?" is really three questions, because there are three technologies. The best choice comes down to your driving pattern and whether you can charge at home.
You can charge at home or work, and your typical day is well within the car's range. You'll enjoy the lowest running costs, the smoothest drive, and minimal maintenance. Long trips just need a little planning around fast chargers — see our EV range guide.
You can't easily charge at home, drive a lot of varied miles, or simply don't want to change your routine. A hybrid quietly improves fuel economy — especially in town — with zero plugging in and no range anxiety.
Your daily driving is short enough to do mostly on electric, but you regularly take longer trips. Charged every night, a PHEV can run on electricity most days and fall back on petrol when needed. The catch: if you never plug it in, you carry a heavy battery around and get worse economy than a normal hybrid.
EVs are cheapest per mile and have the fewest moving parts to maintain, but cost more up front. Hybrids cost less to buy and save fuel without lifestyle change. PHEVs sit in between and only deliver their savings if you charge them regularly. Incentives, taxes, and resale values vary by market and change often, so check what currently applies where you live before deciding.
Regular hybrids never need plugging in — they charge their small battery automatically while driving. Only plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full EVs charge from a socket.
Neither is universally better. A PHEV is more flexible if you can't always charge or take frequent long trips; a full EV is cheaper and cleaner if you can charge at home and most driving is local.
A full EV charged at home is almost always the cheapest per mile, followed by a regularly-charged PHEV, then a hybrid, then a petrol or diesel car.
