What an EV's range figure really means, what changes it day to day, and how much range you actually need.
"Range anxiety" is the number one reason people hesitate to go electric — and it's mostly based on misunderstanding how range works. Once you understand what affects it, planning around range becomes simple. Here's the full picture.
The range on the spec sheet comes from a standardised lab test (such as WLTP in Europe or EPA in the US). These tests make it possible to compare cars fairly, but they're run in controlled conditions that are gentler than real life. Treat the official number as a best case. In normal mixed driving you'll typically see somewhere between 70% and 90% of it; in hard motorway or winter driving, less.
Here's the part that defuses the anxiety: the average driver covers far fewer miles a day than even a modest EV can do on one charge. Because you charge at home overnight, you wake up "full" every morning — something you never do with petrol. For the vast majority of journeys you'll never visit a public charger at all.
Long trips are where range matters, and that's really a charging question, not a range one. A car with a slightly shorter range but very fast charging can be more practical on a road trip than one with a big battery that charges slowly. When comparing EVs, look at charging speed and the public network as closely as the headline range.
This worries new buyers more than it should. Real-world data shows modern EV batteries lose capacity slowly — often only a small percentage over many years and tens of thousands of miles — and most manufacturers back them with long warranties (commonly eight years). Gentle charging habits (avoiding constant 100% charges and frequent rapid charging) help preserve capacity. For most owners, the battery comfortably outlasts the period they keep the car.
Because the advertised figure comes from a gentle lab test. Speed, cold, climate control, terrain, and driving style all reduce it in the real world. Seeing 70–90% of the official figure in normal driving is completely normal, not a fault.
Occasional rapid charging is fine and what it's designed for. Relying on it for every charge, every day, can accelerate degradation slightly over years. For longevity, do most of your charging slowly at home and use rapid chargers mainly for trips.
Generally no. For daily use, charging to around 80% is kinder to the battery and plenty for normal driving. Charge to 100% only when you need the full range for a longer journey, ideally timing it to finish just before you leave.
Most are warrantied for around eight years and typically keep the majority of their capacity well beyond that. With sensible charging habits, the battery usually outlasts the time most people keep the car.
