Driving across borders in winter? Some countries fine you for summer tyres, some only care in mountain zones, and one (Germany) has no dates at all - just weather. The whole map:

Winter tyre FAQ
Are all-season tyres enough to satisfy winter tyre laws?
In most countries with winter rules, yes - IF they carry the 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) symbol. The old M+S marking alone no longer satisfies German law for newer tyres, and other countries are following.
What happens if I crash on summer tyres in a winter-rules country?
Beyond fines, the expensive part: insurers can reduce or refuse payouts, and you can be held partially liable even if the other driver caused the crash. Switzerland is the famous example - no law, full liability.
Do rental cars come with winter tyres?
In mandatory countries (Sweden, Finland, Quebec) yes, usually included. In conditional countries (Germany, Austria) most majors fit them seasonally - but CONFIRM at booking; you, not the rental firm, pay the fine.
When should I switch tyres each year?
The Central European rule of thumb: 'O to O' - October to Easter (Oktober bis Ostern). Below ~7°C, winter compounds outperform summer tyres even on dry roads.
