EVs & charging in France
France has high EV adoption, helped by low-carbon electricity and strong incentives. Charging uses Type 2 (AC) and CCS (DC), and motorway service areas are now widely equipped with rapid chargers (Ionity, TotalEnergies, Allego, Tesla).
Costs, taxes & Crit'Air
Fuel is expensive. A CO₂-based purchase penalty (malus) applies to high-emission cars, with an ecological bonus for clean vehicles — both change yearly. Major cities run low-emission zones (ZFE) controlled by a Crit'Air sticker; EVs receive the cleanest rating.
Buying & owning a car in France
Cars drive on the right. A periodic contrôle technique roadworthiness test is required as cars age, and third-party insurance is mandatory. Compact, efficient cars suit dense cities and high fuel prices.
