EVs & charging in Italy
EV adoption is concentrated in the north and growing. Public charging uses Type 2 (AC) and CCS (DC), with Enel X Way, Be Charge, Ionity and Tesla expanding along motorways and in cities. Historic centres often rely on public points.
Costs, taxes & city access
Fuel is expensive and motorway tolls add to long-trip costs. Annual ownership tax (bollo) is based on power and emissions, and many regions waive it for EVs for a period. Many historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones with camera enforcement; EVs and residents often get access exemptions.
Buying & owning a car in Italy
Cars drive on the right. A periodic revisione roadworthiness test is required as cars age, and RC auto insurance is mandatory and varies sharply by province. City cars and compacts suit dense centres.
