Franchised vs independent vs superstores
Franchised dealers sell a specific brand's new cars and certified pre-owned (CPO) used cars, and handle warranty work. Independent dealers sell used cars from many brands and vary widely in quality. Used-car superstores offer large no-haggle inventories and easy returns, often at a small premium. Each has trade-offs between price, selection and peace of mind.
How to negotiate
In the U.S., new-car prices are typically negotiable. Focus on the total out-the-door price — the vehicle price plus taxes and fees — rather than the monthly payment, which can hide a long loan term or a low trade-in offer. Get financing pre-approved at your bank or credit union so you can compare it against the dealer's offer, and negotiate the purchase price, trade-in and financing as three separate conversations.
What to check on a used car
- Vehicle history. Run a history report to check for accidents, title issues and odometer rollback.
- Independent inspection. Have a trusted mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection before you commit.
- Test drive properly. Drive on different roads, test brakes, A/C and electronics, and listen for noises.
- Warranty status. Check whether any factory warranty remains, or what a CPO warranty covers.
