No breakdown is more common, more predictable, and more regularly experienced as a surprise than a dead 12-volt battery. It fails on the cold morning of the important meeting because cold mornings are exactly when weak batteries fail. Jump-starting: the correct order matters

With a donor car or a lithium jump pack (a glovebox-sized gadget that has largely made donor cars unnecessary and is the single best breakdown purchase available):

  1. Both cars off, in park/neutral with handbrakes on. Read your handbook first – some cars specify dedicated jump points rather than the battery terminals.
  2. Red clamp to the dead battery’s positive (+) terminal.
  3. Other red clamp to the donor’s positive (+).
  4. Black clamp to the donor’s negative (-).
  5. Final black clamp to bare metal on the dead car’s engine or chassis – not the dead battery’s negative terminal. This keeps any spark away from the battery, which can vent flammable gas.
  6. Start the donor, wait a couple of minutes, then start the dead car. Remove clamps in exact reverse order, keeping them from touching anything.
  7. Drive the revived car for a good 30+ minutes – or better, put it on a charger – and treat the event as the battery’s resignation letter unless the cause was obviously your own dome light.

Do not jump-start a battery that is cracked, leaking or frozen. And in any hybrid or EV, follow the manual’s 12V procedure precisely – the high-voltage system is a separate world that roadside clamps must never approach.

Yes, EVs too

An EV with a flat 12-volt battery will not “boot” – screens dark, doors possibly uncooperative – even with a full traction battery, because the 12V system powers the computers that wake everything else. It is one of the most common EV roadside calls. The diagnosis and fix are the same as any other car; the only difference is where the battery hides. If your EV shows 12V warnings or gets slow to wake, act on it like any other battery warning.

Replacement: the details that trip people up

Buy the size, terminal layout and specification your handbook or existing label calls for – and critically, cars with stop-start systems need EFB or AGM batteries, and fitting a cheaper conventional battery to them buys a short, disappointing second life. Many modern cars also need the new battery electronically registered so charging is managed correctly – a two-minute job with the right tool, which is a point in favour of having a shop fit it; fitted prices are often close to bare-battery prices anyway. Check the manufacture date on the battery itself (they age on shelves too), and mind the order of disconnection: negative off first, on last.

Making the next one last
