A test drive is your best chance to catch problems and find out whether a car actually suits you. Rushed or skipped, it is how people end up regretting a purchase. Here is how to do it properly.
Before you set off
Start with the car cold if you can, since some faults only show on a cold start. Get comfortable first, adjust the seat and mirrors, check you can see out clearly and reach the controls easily. Look at the dashboard when you start up, and make sure no warning lights stay on.
On the road
Drive on a mix of roads if possible, including some at higher speed. Check that the car pulls smoothly without hesitation or odd noises, that the brakes feel firm and pull the car up straight, and that the steering is precise and does not wander or vibrate. On an automatic, the gear changes should be smooth, and on a manual the clutch and gears should engage cleanly.
Listen and feel for trouble
Turn the radio off and pay attention. Listen for knocks, whines or rattles, feel for vibrations through the wheel or seat, and watch for any smoke or unusual smells. Try a full turn in both directions and reverse into a space to check the steering and visibility at low speed.
For electric and hybrid cars
On an EV or hybrid, notice how the regenerative braking feels and whether you can adjust it, how quiet and refined the car is, and how smoothly it switches between electric and engine power on a hybrid. Check the displayed range against what you would expect.
After the drive
When you stop, look under the car for fresh leaks, check the engine bay, and note anything that felt off. Do not be shy about asking questions or asking for a second, longer drive. A seller with nothing to hide will not mind.
Always pair it with an inspection
A test drive reveals how a car feels, but not everything under the surface. Combine it with the used car inspection checklist, a history check, and an independent mechanical inspection for anything significant.
