What are the charging types?
- Slow AC (a normal wall socket, ~2–3 kW): 30–60 km of range per hour of charging. Fine as a backup or for plug-in hybrids.
- Home/destination AC (7–22 kW wallbox): full overnight charge for nearly any EV. The workhorse of EV life.
- Public DC fast (50–150 kW): 20–80% in 20–45 minutes. Road-trip tool.
- Ultra-rapid DC (150–350 kW): 15–25 minutes for 20–80% on cars that support it.
What does charging really cost?
Home electricity is almost always the cheapest – often dramatically. The universal math: cost per 100 km = (consumption, usually 15–20 kWh/100km) × your per-kWh price. Off-peak/night tariffs in many countries halve that again. Public DC charging typically costs 2–4× home rates, and ultra-rapid can approach petrol-level running costs. An EV charged at home on a night tariff is where the legendary savings live.
Do I need a wallbox at home?
If you can install one, yes. Benefits over a wall socket: 3–7× faster, safer sustained current, scheduling to catch cheap tariffs, and often required for tariff/incentive eligibility. Many countries subsidise installation. Renters and apartment dwellers: check for shared-parking charging rights laws (increasingly common), workplace charging, or reliable AC posts near home – thousands of EV owners live happily on public AC + occasional DC.
Does fast charging damage the battery?
Occasional DC fast charging is fine; a diet of only ultra-rapid charging accelerates degradation modestly. The kinder habits: keep daily charge between roughly 20–80%, charge to 100% only before long trips, and avoid leaving the car at 100% or near 0% for days. Modern thermal management does most of the protection for you.
How do I plan road-trip charging?
Use a planner (the car’s own, or apps like ABRP/PlugShare-style maps), aim to arrive at chargers around 10–20% and leave at 80% (the last 20% is slow everywhere), have a backup charger for every stop, and carry the two payment methods that dominate your region (app + contactless card).
