On certain coaches equipped with ZF-Astronic transmissions, a cell phone placed in the proximity of the shifter touch pad could cause the display to change from R (Reverse) to 2 (second gear) should the phone receive a call. Regardless what the indicator displays, the transmission can only physically engage a forward gear if the vehicle is stopped and the brake pedal is depressed. However, should this occur, and the driver fails to realize the wrong gear is selected (Drive instead of Reverse), a vehicle crash could occur, potentially causing physical injury or death to occupants and/or bystanders. Correction: Dealers will install upgraded transmission software.
The wording above is the department's own, as it stood in the monthly file this site last read. Vehicle counts are the sum of the counts published for each make and model the recall covers. To act on a recall, use the official notice: Transport Canada recall 2008006.
