The American recall register is not a fixed set of documents. A manufacturer files a notice, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes it, and afterwards the text is edited: a remedy is extended, a consequence is reworded, a model is added. When that happens the new text replaces the old one. The agency shows you the current version. The earlier one is gone, and nothing marks the page to say it ever existed.
We take a fingerprint of every notice in the register, every time we read the file. Not a sample. All of them.

What a fingerprint is, and why it settles the question
For each campaign NHTSA publishes three blocks of text: the defect summary, the consequence, and the remedy. We take a SHA-256 of each and keep the first eight characters. Eight hexadecimal characters is four billion possibilities per field: two different texts landing on the same fingerprint is not something that happens by accident.
That means we do not need to store the agency’s words to know whether they moved. If a fingerprint we recorded last week does not match the one we take today, the notice was edited between those two readings, and we can say which of the three fields it was, and on what day we saw it.
What we can show
Alongside the fingerprint we keep a dated copy of the three blocks of text themselves (the defect summary, the consequence and the remedy) for every campaign in the file. So when a notice is edited we can do more than prove it happened: we can show you both versions, word by word, whichever of the fifteen thousand it is.
The fingerprint is still what does the detecting, because comparing fifteen thousand short hashes takes a second and comparing fifteen thousand documents does not. The stored wording is what lets us answer the next question, which is what it used to say.
You can ask for any of it directly: the wording we hold for campaign 24V329, and the same for any other number. A claim nobody can check is only a claim.
The one limit that is real
We can only see changes made after we started reading. A notice rewritten before 21 August 2026 was already rewritten when we first read it, and nothing we hold can show what it said before that. Everything from here on is on the record.

NHTSA publishes the whole register as one downloadable file. We read it end to end, take one record per campaign number, and fingerprint the three text fields. The file is streamed straight out of the archive rather than unpacked onto disk, and the reading is repeated on a schedule. The status page shows when each engine behind this site last ran.
