On certain buses, the grease used in the first generation Pailton bevel gear box is not suited for low temperatures (-20 degree Celsius). Additionally, water could penetrate the bevel box through the seal, contaminating the grease and causing corrosion in the bearings. A combination of corrosion, contaminated grease and low temperatures would increase steering effort and, over time, could result in the sudden loss of operational steering which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the first generation Pailton bevel box with a ZF bevel box.
