The consequence

Due to abrasion and rust, a hole may develop in the power steering tube, allowing the fluid to leak out, resulting in added steering effort, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the leaking fluid increases the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source such as a hot engine or exhaust component.

Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the power steering tube for sufficient clearance. If the vehicle has insufficient clearance, the power steering tube assembly will be replaced, free of charge. The manufacturer notified owners in July 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-004.

What it said before

This campaign is in the register but not yet in the dated wording archive, so we cannot yet say whether its text has moved. It enters the archive on the next pass.

This is one of 745 notices in the record whose component field names steering. Across that group the median wait before owners were written to was 39 days.

The same recall in other countries

This campaign carries a manufacturer code that also appears in another country’s register, which means the same defect was recalled there too.

  • Canada: Transport Canada recall 2014192, recorded 28 May 2014 (within a week of the American filing)

Matched on SR14004, the manufacturer’s own number for this campaign, which is the only field the registers share. Exact match, nothing paired on brand and date. The two dates are adjacent instruments rather than the same one, so a difference of a day or two means nothing.
