3.2 million vehicles are covered by these 68 campaigns. 77,139 of them under a do-not-drive instruction, 2.4 million under a park-outside one, and 794,645 fixed over the air. A campaign can carry more than one of the three. That is the number the maker filed as potentially affected, added up campaign by campaign, so a vehicle caught by two campaigns is counted twice. Almost every recall says: book it in when you can. A small number say something else entirely: stop driving the car now, or leave it outside away from your house. Those are the ones on this page.
NHTSA sets these flags campaign by campaign. It does not publish the list of every campaign carrying one. We read the whole register and build that list, and we rebuild it on a rolling cycle so it does not go stale.
the vehicle
from buildings
the air
Of the 15,259 American campaigns we currently hold, 68 carry at least one of these flags: a fraction of one per cent, which is exactly why they are worth pulling out and naming.
What the three instructions actually mean
- Do not drive. The gravest instruction a recall can give. The vehicle should not be used at all until the repair is done: not for short trips, not to get to the dealer. Most of these campaigns cover small numbers of vehicles, because the fault is usually a build error on a specific batch rather than a design flaw across a model year.
- Park it outside, away from buildings. This is the wording used when a vehicle can catch fire with the ignition off and nobody in it. The instruction names the building rather than the driver, because the risk is to the house and everyone in it.
- Fixed over the air. The remedy is a software update sent to the car. There may be no garage visit, no invoice, and nothing the owner ever signs. Convenient, and the reason a later change to the notice can pass completely unnoticed, which is the thing this site exists to catch.
Do not drive it at all
29 campaigns in the register we hold carry NHTSA’s stop-driving flag. It is the gravest instruction a recall can give: the vehicle is not to be used until the repair is done.

Park it outside, away from buildings
36 campaigns carry the park-outside flag. It is the wording used when a vehicle can catch fire while switched off and unattended, which is why it names the building rather than the driver.

Fixed over the air
4 campaigns are remedied by a software update sent to the car. There may be no garage visit, no invoice, and nothing the owner ever sees, which is also why a later change to the notice can pass unnoticed.

If a vehicle you own is on this list
These pages are a record, not a lookup. Whether a particular car is affected depends on its VIN, and only the manufacturer and the agency can answer that. Check it at NHTSA’s own VIN lookup, which is free and authoritative. Recall repairs are free of charge; there is no version of this where an owner should be asked to pay.
How this list is built, and what it does not cover
The flags are the agency’s own. The list is ours, assembled by reading every campaign in the register we hold and keeping the ones carrying a flag. Two things it deliberately does not do:
- It is not the whole history of NHTSA. It covers the campaigns in the register we hold, not every recall ever issued. What we hold, and when each engine last ran, is public on the status page.
- It is never shown half-built. The list is only replaced when a full pass over the register finishes. A partial list of stop-driving recalls reads as reassurance it has not earned, so until a pass completes the page shows nothing rather than something incomplete.
Where to go next
- Recall notices, and what they said before: the wording of individual campaigns, with the earlier version marked word by word.
- The same part, recalled again and again: 462 parts with more than one campaign against them.
- UK car recalls and Canada car recalls.
Recall records and the flags on them are published by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and are US Government public domain. The list of every campaign carrying a flag, and the comparison between readings, are CarsMultiverse.
